A slightly harder crochet flower part one.

flowersBuilding on the how to crochet an easy flower this post is all about double crochet  Think of it as a building block of crochet.

If you are new to crochet, you have my permission to  get excited about now as you are about to actually master crochet. Seriously once you can do the slip knot, chain and double crochet, the rest are just variations on these stitches!Gather the necessary tools. Hook, yarn, darning needle and scissors.   So…Start with a slip knot and then do 24 chain.

ingredients

chain

crochet hook through chain     I am using contrasting wool to make the`double crochet stand out from the chain. Get your yarn ready to pull through the fourth chain from your hook.

pick up yarn 2Then pull your yarn through as though you were making a chain except you will have 2 loops on your hook.

pull through loop

Final stage is pick up your yarn and pull it through both loops.

one loop

So to recap, hook through next chain.

Pull through yarn so 2 loops on hook.

Pick up yarn and pull through both loopschain and double crochetContinue to do double crochet into every chain stitch until the end. You will have 20 or 21 stitches depending on your technique.

Practice your double crochet and next time we will finish the amazingly beautiful crochet flower.  Tomorrow a flower, the day after that anything you like!

Dont get bogged down with perfectionism. Just concentrate on the 3 movements.

Hook through chain.

Yarn through chain .

Yarn through both loops.

More next time.

  2. Thank you so much for commenting Linne. It is so interesting (and confusing for some) how the stitches have different names in different parts of the world. You explained it very well discussing how many loops were on the hook. 🙂

  3. Yes, in Canada we call this ‘single crochet’. for us, ‘double crochet’ is when you wrap the yarn around the hook once, then pull the thread through the next loop so there are three loops on the hook, then pull yarn through the first two loops, then through the remaining two loops. This whole thing of terminology could really be confusing, couldn’t it? I’m glad you mentioned it and even more glad you have such clear pictures! Easy then to see what is meant by the ‘wheelbarrow stitch’. LOL
Great blog, thank you. I’ll be back. My Mum taught me when I was about nine and I used to teach customers in the Lewiscraft stores when they were still around and I worked there. Lots of fun.

  5. It is entirely my pleasure, if you lived eight thousand miles closer you could pop into a gentlestitches class. Meanwhile we will do “online” classes. I tell you something, those flowers you made and posted really made me happy. If you get time read “The red tent” by Anita Diamant. It is a great book which talks of handing down crafts from one gen to the next among other things.
It is also about the old testament from Dinah’s perspective. It is a book to make you feel strong and also make you smile.
